Want to do your part in helping to keep the environment clean, but don’t know where to start?

Try these 10 simple ways of transforming your home into an eco-friendly establishment!

1. RECYCLE! It’s not just aluminum cans any longer! You will be amazed at how much can be recycled these days. Find out what can be recycled and where HERE.

2.  Repair any water leaks or dripping faucets. Not only will you be saving our water supply, you will be saving money as well.

3.  Use energy saving light bulbs.  According to Energy Star,  energy efficient bulbs use about 75% less energy than a standard bulb and last up to ten times longer.

4. Use reusable cloth bags at the grocery store. Did you know that more than 100,000 sea creatures are killed each year by plastic bags? Reusable bags also save trees, save gas and oil, and decrease waste in landfills.

5. Do not bag your grass clipping. Allow grass clipping to spread across the grass instead. It will decompose and fertilize your lawn. It also saves room in our landfills.

6. Only use your dishwasher and clothes washer when completely full. You will use less water and save on electricity.

7. Say no to Styrofoam. Styrofoam is not easily recyclable and takes millions of years to biodegrade. Ask for paper instead.

8. Buy locally. Purchasing goods and services locally reduces fuel emissions used in transporting products and helps support your local economy. Use to locate green businesses in your area.

9. Try biking or walking more and driving less. You will save money on gasoline, reduce carbon emissions, and get the exercise your body needs everyday!

10. Purchase energy efficient appliances.  Look for ones that have earned the ENERGY STAR seal. They meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy.

How is your family doing on lessening your carbon footprint?

If you are interested in crafts and you have children especially, start a craft box from
your recycling box. It’s amazing how everyday items destined for the garbage man
can be held back and used by kids to amuse them and make things with.

    – Small jars, bits of material, paper towel and toilet paper holders, odd buttons, small cardboard boxes….the list is endless.
