5 Ways to GoGreen for Back to School

August 31, 2011

Go Green this school year!

The first day of school is an exciting time for students and parents alike. New clothes, backpacks and supplies all point to the anticipation of a new year of firsts (and sometimes lasts!).

This year why not challenge yourself to GO GREEN for back to school and all school year-long! Here are 5 simple ways to get started:

1. Instead of driving your child to school try walking, biking , setting-up a neighborhood car pool or have your child ride the school bus to save on car emissions.

2. Buy sustainable school supplies including recycled paper notebooks, canvas or cardboard binders made from recycled materials and pencils made from sustainable forestry.

3. Be sure your school has a recycling program. Encourage your school’s Parent Teacher Organization to equip the school with recycle bins and to encourage the students to recycle.

4. Pack a “green” lunch. Avoid the use of plastic sandwich bags, plastic water bottles, brown paper bags and other disposable items. Invest in reusable lunch boxes, containers and stainless steel water bottles instead. Also, try to pack healthy, organic lunches for your kids.

5.  Plan a clothing swap with friends and neighbors or shop at consignment stores for gently used clothes instead of purchasing all new items for back to school. Not only are you helping the environment, you are helping your wallet as well!

Be sure to visit the GO GREEN WEB DIRECTORY for more information on Massachusetts green businesses to help you to GO GREEN this school year!
