WATD 95.9: Eco-friendly Lawn and Garden Care

May 1, 2012

Thank you to those who tuned in to hear Paula on 95.9 WATD!  This week Paula discussed eco-friendly lawn and garden care. Here are a few tips she shared:

Kill Weeds WITHOUT Harsh Chemicals:

Trying to rid your sidewalks and driveway of weeds can seem like a never-ending job in the warm weather months. But, using a harsh chemical can not only harms the environment, it can be harmful to your family and pets as well. Here are a few eco-friendly options to try:

-Try pouring boiling water on the weeds to kill them down to the root. (Be careful not to pour on any plants or flowers you wish to keep. It will kill those as well!)

-Use vinegar in a spray bottle to kill weeds. (Just be careful not to spray other plants OR let it near pets and children. Vinegar can destroy plants and burn little paws and feet!)

– There are several organic weed killers on the market as well that are effective in killing unwanted weeds.

Spring is the Perfect Time to Add a Water Collection System to Your Home!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, lawn and garden watering make up nearly 40% of total household water use during the summer. An average homeowner can save nearly 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months with the use of a rain barrel. Think of the savings!

WHAT IS A RAIN BARREL?

A rain barrel is a system used to collect and store a free source of water (rain!) from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and be diverted to storm drains and streams.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

1. Rain water saves you money on both your water AND sewer bills. (Many cities base sewer bills on water consumption.) Rain Barrels allow FREE access to clean water.

2. Rain water is lime, calcium and chlorine-free making it perfect for watering flowers, lawns or even washing windows and cars!

 3. Rain barrels help protect our environment. Rain water that travels through our streets collects oil, pet waste, fertilizers and other toxins before ending up in our rivers and streams. By collecting rain water in barrels you help protect the environment by reducing pollution in our rivers.

Just discovered the Vinegar trick ourselves. It really works well. Your show was great, glad I was able to tune it.
