GoGreen Summer Tips

June 10, 2012

Summer is here! Time to get outside and enjoy the weather.  Whether you are spending time by the pool and spending times in the woods, here are a few tips on going green this summer:

BUG REPELLENT

1. Citronella Oil, Lavender Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Peppermint Oil, Orange Oil, Rose Geranium

Essential Oils make terrific natural bug repellents. Try purchasing shampoos, lotions, candles or sprays made with these essential oils and apply and reapply liberally and often . (Be sure to test a small area of your skin first to be sure it not irritating!)

2. Clothing.

Mosquitoes, ticks and other biting insects are attracted to dark-colored clothing. Opt for light-colored,loose-fitting clothing that includes a long-sleeve shirt, pants, closed-toe shoes and hat when hiking or camping instead of dark, tight-fitting clothing that can easily be bitten through by insects.

SUNSCREEN

Sunscreen is a vital component to any summertime fun. But, be sure to choose your sunscreen wisely!

1. Protect the Environment. While sunscreen is important in the fight against skin cancer, certain sunscreens can harm the environment when they wash off your skin and into lakes, rivers and oceans. These harsh chemicals can find their way into fish and may cause bleaching of coral reefs.

2. Environmental Working Group. The EWG has extensively tested over 1,000 sunscreen products and has created an extensive database rating sunscreens on a scale of one (no hazard) to ten (high hazard). Visit their website to find out the safest sunscreens for you and the environment.

MISC

1. BBQ. Choose propane or electric grill over charcoal.

2. Transportation. Try walking or riding bikes around town instead of driving.

3. Picnics. Opt for re-usable dinnerware, plates and cups. Buy organically and locally including fresh fruits, vegetables and meats instead of traditional.

4. Rain Barrels. Consider installing a rain barrel to catch excess rain water and reduce your water consumption when watering your grass or garden during the hot, dry summer months.

We at the GoGreen Web Directory hope you have an amazing summer! Be sure to visit our website to stay up-to-date on everything green in Massachusetts!
