SOAPBERRIES: Eco-friendly laundry soap and so much more!

January 29, 2013

soberrycleanHave heard of SOAPBERRIES, a chemical-free alternative to traditional laundry soap that leaves laundry clean, fresh and non-irritating to the skin?

Soap Nuts are berries from the Chinese Soap Berry Tree (Sapindus Mukorossi). These berries are harvested, and then are dried in the sun. There are no chemicals added.  All soap nuts are organic and wild crafted as they grow wild in Northern India and Napal. Soap Nuts contain a chemical called Saponin. Saponin is a natural soap (surfactant). It is hypoallergenic and totally eco-friendly.

Not only are the great for laundry, they can be used all over the house!

Here are a few ideas:

IN THE DISHWASHER:

Place 3 shells tied in netting in the base of the cutlery container and add a VERY small amount of vinegar in the rinse aid dispenser. Compost the used berries in the garden when finished.

CLEANING YOUR PET:

Place 3 or 4 soapberries in a liter of water and bring to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes. Use like you would other soap to clean your pet. Remember to avoid eyes and ears and rinse your pet THOROUGHLY! (Wash a small area of your pet first to be sure it doesn’t irritate skin)

HOUSEHOLD CLEANER:

Here is a great recipe for creating a multi-purpose cleaner from our friends and GoGreen member, SoBerry Clean:

Follow the ratio of about 15 soapnuts per 6.5 cups of water.  What you will want to do is boil the soapberries in the water for an hour.  Cool the liquid, and then strain out the soapberry pieces.  You want to store your liquid in a cool, dark place or refrigerate.  As this liquid does not contain a preservative, it will store for 3 to 4 days.  If you refrigerate it, it will last longer (remember this is a cleaning agent–if you have children be sure it is labeled in some way that indicates it is not for consumption).  As time goes on, you will figure out exactly how much you will need.

GLASS AND WINDOW CLEANER:
Combine 2 tbsp Soap Berries Liquid Solution, 2 tbsp Vinegar, 3c water- mix all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Again, be sure to store the cleaner in the fridge and MARK IT WELL so other family members know it is NOT FOOD!

You can purchase Soap Nuts from GoGreen Members –  SoBerry Clean or Marshfield Trading Post.
