6 Eco-friendly Pet Ideas

March 18, 2013

Looking for a few simple, eco-friendly pet ideas for your furry friend ? Check out our list of practical and simple ways of adding eco-friendly pet ideas to your home:

1. START WITH A HEALTHY DIET. Feed your pet with high-quality food, not one full of preservatives and chemicals. Or if you are more adventurous, try making your own! There are many recipes available online including this collection from (If you do go this route, we would LOVE to hear your experiences!)

2. KEEP THEM NATURALLY CLEAN.  Want your pet smelling springtime fresh? Try using eco-friendly pet shampoos instead of traditional ones made with harsh chemicals. Or make your own using all-natural dish soap to help combat fleas. Add 10-20 drops of grapefruit seed extract to the dish soap to prevent ticks and mites as well. (Be sure to check with your veterinarian and test a small area of your pets skin to be sure there is no irritation before using. And be careful not to get it in your pets eyes and ears!)

3. PLEASE PICK UP.  The easiest of all the eco-friendly pet ideas? Clean-up after your pet!  Not only does this keep the neighbors happy, it keeps waste from entering ground water. Also, be sure to use biodegradable bags or paper bags to clean up your pet’s waste.

4.  NO CLAY FOR YOUR CAT.  Avoid clay based cat litter.  Look for alternatives made out of plant-based material such as corn, wheat, recycled newspapers or wood chips, which are friendlier on the environment than clay litter which does not biodegrade.

5. ADOPT FROM A SHELTER.  In addition to providing animals with loving homes, shelters tend to use donated or recycled materials for animal bedding. Also, be sure to have your pet spayed or neutered.

6. RAGS TO RICHES. Upcycle those old  towels.  Do you have towels that have been through the wash a few times too many?  Designate old bath towels to your pet to clean up any spills and messes or for her regular bath.
