Eco-Friendly Barbeque Party! It’s time to plan yours…

July 8, 2013

eco-friendly barbeque partySummertime means eco-friendly barbeque party time! Who doesn’t love to invite friends and family over to celebrate the warm weather? But, don’t forsake Mother Nature in the process! Here are a few tips on keeping your friends AND the Earth happy during your summer celebrations:

Already own a charcoal grill? Avoid adding nasty carcentigens to your cookout by purchasing organic or natural lump brand charcoal which is made from hardwood, contains no additives, and produces less ash when burned than traditional briquettes.

Looking for an even cleaner option? Try a gas grill instead. Gas grills that use Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPS)  emit one hundred times less CO2 than the average charcoal briquette. Natural gas is another energy-efficient solution.

Feeling really ambitious? Create your very own Solar Powered Grill! Solar powered grills harness the sun to do the work for you without the use of charcoal or gas lessening your carbon footprint and the carbon in your food! Here is a simple way to create one: HOW TO BUILD A SOLAR POWERED GRILL.

Ready to create your delicious menu? How about juicy hamburgers or sweet fruit and veggies?  Don’t forget to purchase your  menu items from a local farmer’s market or local retailer! Even local cheeses and breads can be found at many farmer’s markets or health food stores. Not only are you helping our local economy, you are helping the environment by cutting fuel consumption during transportation and you are receiving the FRESHEST food possible!  Visit the GoGreen Web Directory to find a local retailer near your home.

Don’t forget to drink local too. Serve local and/or organic beers in glass bottles and be sure to have a recycling bin available for when folks have finished. Offer natural, organic juices or water with lemon and lime instead of soda for a healthy and refreshing treat.

If possible avoid disposable plates, glasses and cutlery and opt for the real thing instead. Though it takes a bit more time to clean-up, it is well worth the effort. Disposable dishes and cutlery contribute to the mountains of plastic waste already swirling around in our landfills and oceans.

If you must use disposable dishes, look for products that are recycled, biodegradable or made from unbleached paper products.

Now sit back, relax and enjoy these hot, summer days with family and friends!
